Belize City
Reggae, dreadlocks and broken English are characteristics that best describe Belize City, a truly Caribbean city in Central America. Belize City was once the capital of the country and today it continues to be the most populated and the heart of the country. Almost everything that happens in Belize is connected with the city except for some government business that gets done in Belmopan, the new capital.
There might not be much to do in Belize City but it can be your hub for discovering and enjoying Belize. A two hour drive west will take you to the rainforest, Maya ruins, waterfalls, caves and villages. A fifteen minute flight will take to you to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye - the number one tourist destination in the country. Take an early flight south and you can visit Dangriga, Placencia and Punta Gorda and be back in the city for dinner. A short boat trip and you can be snorkeling or diving the largest coral reef of the Americas or simply relaxing on one of the many sandy cayes off the mainland coast.
Nightlife is limited except for the casino and the disco on weekends. While in the city you might want to visit the House of Culture, St. Johns Anglican Cathedral and stroll through the Fort George Area where you will find beautiful plantation houses. Belize City is well connected with the rest of the country either by bus service, water taxi, or air service.
