Half Moon Caye Natural Monument
Located to the southeast of Lighthouse Reef Atoll sits Half Moon Caye, this atoll was the first ever established reserve by the Natural Parks Systems Act of 1981. This reserve was established in order to protect the Red-footed Booby bird and the Magnificent Frigatebird. Both of which seem to coexist on the caye in harmony. A reported ninety eight species of the birds are on the Caye. Of the ninety-eight, seventy-seven are reported to be migrants such as the Osprey, White-crowned Pigeons and the Mangrove Warblers. Another resident of the Atoll are the Hawksbill and Loggerhead Turtles who come ashore annually to lay their eggs.
