House of Culture

The House of Culture was built in 1812 and was once the residence of the governor general, the queen's representative in Belize.  It sustained damages from two hurricanes, one in 1931 & 1961.  Following Hurricane Hattie in 1961,  the government moved its offices to the new Capital, Belmopan.  The House of Culture then became a venue for special occasions and a guesthouse for visiting VIPs. (Queen Elizabeth stayed here in 1985, Prince Philip in 1988.)  It is now open to the public, where it displays its silver, glassware, and furniture. One of Baron's Bliss boats is also displayed in the garden.
