Placencia

With the crystal clear waters (over100 feet visibility) of the Caribbean Sea the island is indeed a diver's paradise. A forty minute flight south from Belize City will take you to a narrow stretch of beach along the Caribbean Sea known as the Placencia Peninsula.

Along the Penninsula you will find Maya Beach, the Garifuna Village of Seine Bight and at the very south end the Village of Placencia. Placencia is known for it friendly people and great fishing. The hotels in the village are mostly family run and are very basic, for a more upscale hotel you will need to check north of the village. Among the local fruit trees and the village sidewalk, eateries, pubs, and tourist shops can be found.

The local guides are always ready to take you fishing, snorkeling or for a walk in the jungle. Placencia offers both shallow and deep sea fishing as well as fishing along the reef, river banks and mangrove lagoons. For divers and snorkelers a short boat ride to the cayes along the coral reef will put them into an underwater paradise. For those more into exploring the tropical rainforest, tours are available from the hotels.
